Peter Bidgood, abridean's product manager, was at HostingCon 2007 in Chicago July 23rd to 25th. Billed as "the largest gathering of hosted services professionals in the world", HostingCon provides a focused view into the opportunities and challenges facing both web and mail hosters.
A common theme in many of the presentations was that web hosters need to move beyond just providing web pages and POP email accounts in order to generate additional margin and to protect their customer base. Offering hosted Exchange was by far the most frequently suggested way of providing additional value added services.
This message sounded familiar. Back in January 2005, Don Dimon of MailStreet, an Exchange hosting company which has roots in web hosting and development, commented on the futility of "trying to make a living out of $5 [a month] Web sites." The success of MailStreet's hosted Exchange offering speaks for itself!
