Hosted Messaging and Collaboration (HMC)

The Hosted Messaging and Collaboration (HMC) Solution was developed by Microsoft and Compaq (now Hewlett-Packard) for service providers wishing to offer hosted messaging and collaboration services. The HMC solution includes a prescriptive architecture for applications such as Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint as well as a provisioning system (MPS) and sample control panel.

Microsoft has recently announced that there will be no new versions of HMC

As some service providers and provisioning vendors have based their products on HMC, this is causing concern within the SP community.

In 2002 Abridean was the first software vendor to have its provisioning solution (abridean Provisor) approved for HMC v1.0

Abrideanís relationship with Microsoft actually predates HMC, going back to 2000. Since that time abridean has both provided feedback to Microsoft regarding requirements and incorporated many of Microsoftís HMC recommendations.

However a key differentiator has always been the abridean provisioning engine which is used in Provisor as opposed to the Microsoft Provisioning System (formerly known as MAPS and MPF). Basing abridean Provisor on a provisioning engine that abridean had developed and controlled provided benefits in terms of both functionality and being able to generate timely updates.

With regards to MPS and HMC being at end of life, abrideanís use of its own provisioning engine means that abrideanProvisor will not be impacted.

In addition, abrideanís support of many of the elements of HMC provides a greatly simplified upgrade path that we have successfully used to transition service providers from end of life MPS based systems.
